Throughout its history, ACTRA has been a strong advocate for artists and Canadian cultural sovereignty. ACTRA believes in the creativity of Canadians and in our abilities to tell and perform our own stories. ACTRA also believes that Canadian audiences want Canadian choices available to them throughout our media landscape. ACTRA members, have a vital stake in Canada's cultural future. Through ongoing media and lobbying campaigns that target all levels of government, through submissions to Canada's broadcast and telecommunications regulator (CRTC) and at industry events, ACTRA speaks out for the development and protection of Canadian culture, a strong film and television industry and more work opportunities for our members.
ACTRA's Public Policy Activities
Since the early days Of ACTRA and its predecessor organizations, Canada's performers have been active participants in the public policy process, urging adoption of supportive legislation and programs on behalf of professional artists and the industries in which we work.
Policies and programs have a DIRECT economic impact on the membership.
ACTRA's efforts are about respecting the work of artists and ensuring viable livelihoods for ACTRA members. Policy issues ACTRA is engaged in include fighting to fix the crisis in homegrown dramatic television, advocating for provincial Status of the Artist legislation, protecting the freelance tax status Of performers and being a voice for performers' rights in copyright law.
The issues ACTRA is engaged with have an INDIRECT economic impact on the membership.
ACTRA also works to support the industries in which our members work. Our efforts to ensure that funding programs and tax credits for producers are maintained and our advocacy at the CRTC for improved Canadian content requirements for broadcasters are directed at ensuring there is a strong production industry, with obligations to produce Canadian programs. We are confident in the abilities of our members and know that producers will hire professional performers to fulfill these obligations.
ACTRA members believe passionately that, as a mature nation, Canada needs an adequate supply of quality Canadian programming choices in all media.
Underlying all of our efforts is a strong belief that the policies and programs we advocate are in the broader public interest. A strong domestic production, distribution and exhibition system is absolutely vital to Canadian culture and our sovereignty as a nation.
