Thishasbeenatremendouslybusyandfruitfulyearforourunion.Wehavebeenattheforefrontofmajorpolicyandregulatorydiscussionsthatcoulddramaticallyaffectourindustryandhavecontinuedtoforgeandstrengthenallianceswithperformersunionsaroundtheworldandrighthereathome.ButfrontandcentreinourworkhasbeenthecreationofafreshvisionforthefutureofTelevisioninCanada.AndofcoursewhenyoutalkaboutthefutureofTVwhatyouarereallytalkingaboutisthefutureofcontentdeliveryoncomputersiPadstelephonesandcommunicationsystemswecanbarelyimagineletalonedefine.Weareandhavealwaysbeenchampionsforourindustry.WeknowthatourindustryisahugecontributortotheCanadianeconomyandweknowinthisBraveNewWorldofcyberspaceweneedtocontinuetobeleaders.Ourindustryneedstobeproperlynourishedandsupportedbecausegiventherightresourceswecanmakemagic.TheCRTCkickedoffanambitiousnationalconversationlastyearcalledLetsTalkTVandACTRAwaskeentoensurethatthevoicesofartistswereabigpartofthatconsultation.Manyofyouparticipatedthroughdiscussiongroupsorforumsandonlinechatsandourvoiceswereheard.InSeptemberACTRAappearedbeforetheCommissiontoformallypresentourvision.ACTRAbelievestheCRTCmustbalanceconsumerchoiceagainstthecostsrequiredtoensureahealthybroadcastingandproductionsector.Weneedtosafeguardabroadcastsystemthatwehavestruggledlongandhardtobuild.ItisasystemthatiscrucialtowhatmakesuswhoweareproudCanadians.Butweareatacriticaljunctureinourindustry.Newtechnologyischangingnotonlythewaywecreatebutalsothewayourworkisbeingdistributedandseen.OurgovernmentandtheCRTCneedtobeonthecrestofthatwave.Sowehavebeendrivingtheagendaaroundthisissue.WetookleadingactorstoOttawainNovembertospeakwithMPsandSenatorsMinistersandtheirkeystafftotalkabouttheissuesthatarefrontandcentreforour22000members.WewereclearandpassionateabouttheneedforcontentregulationsignificanteconomicsupportfortheCBCandgreateracross-the-boardsupportforCanadianartists.AhtheCBC.Ourbelovedandbeleagueredpublicbroadcasterishavingachallengingtimeofit.IthasbeenrockedbyscandalisoverseenbyaBoardsorelylackinginmembershipfromthecreativecommunityanddominatedbyanadministrativehierarchythathasflounderedasittriestokeeptheCorporationsheadabovewater.Theseproblemshaverootsthatgodeepintotheheartoftheorganizationbutaboveallelsearedirectlytiedtoadeathbyathousandcuts.Yearafteryearsequentialgovernmentshavefailedournationalbroadcaster.TheCBCRadioCanadaoncethecrownjewelinourculturalfirmamenthasbeenreducedtotheroleofanimpoverishedspinsterauntinaChekhoviandrama.YetweallknowandmostCanadiansbelievethatCBCRadioCanadamustandcanbetheleaderinbringingoriginaldistinctiveCanadiancontenttotheworld.TheCBCsjobistohelpdefineusasanationandweknowthatthekeytoitssuccessisputtingmoneyonscreensofallsizesnotintocorporatebureaucracy.Itisinspiringtoseewhattheyhaveachievedunderthemoststressfulyearperhapsintheirentirehistory.Thewinterline-upofshowslaunchingonCBC-TVholdsgreatpromisefromStephanieMorgensternandMarkEllissCompanyXtoLawrenceHillandClementVirgosTheBookofNegroestoDonaldSutherlandsani-matedPiratesPassage.AndwowdidthebrilliantshowrunnerLaurieFinstad-KnizhniksboldStrangeEmpireevershakeupthefallschedule.Butwebelievetheseaccomplishmentsachievedunderduressarenotenough.Themosturgentneedinourever-expandingtechnologicaluniverseiscontentandhereinCanadaifwearetokeepourplaceincyberspaceweneedtocreateevenmorehigh-qualityCanadiandrama.OurpublicbroadcasterhasauniqueroletoplayindaringtoreflectCanadabacktoCanadians.TheCBCmustbeaplacewhereaboveallelseourstoriesmatter.WearehopingthatCBCRadioCanadaExecutiveVPEnglishServicesHeatherConwayandherentireteamcaninvigoratepublicbroadcastingbybehavinglikeaboldpublicbroadcasteragain.OnourmostrecentLobbyDaysinOttawaIwasteamedwithMarkMcKinney.AllupanddowntheHillMPsandtheiraidesspokefondlyofhisfirstbigshowKidsinTheHall.Inthelate80stheserieswasnotrisk-adverseandwentontodo102episodes.UnderthesteadyhandofToronto-4ACTRAMagazineWinter2015ACTRANationalPresidentFerneDowneyPresidentsMessageTakingOurPlaceInCyberspacebyFerneDowneyWeneedtosafeguardabroadcastsystemthatwehavestruggledlongandhardtobuild.ItisasystemthatiscrucialtowhatmakesuswhoweareproudCanadians. bornexecutiveproducerLorneMichaelstheshowbecameaninternalsuccess.Itwasatimebe-foretheascentofrealityTVattheMotherCorpbeforetheCBCdrivenbydecreasingfund-ingdriftedintoitsunfruitfulcompetitionwiththeprivatebroadcasters.Mywishfor2015isthatCBCrediscoversabraveapproachtocontentcreationandkeepsfocusedfirmlyonthework.IfwecanavoidmassivestructuralmistakesthatmaydestroytheunderpinningsthatsupportourindustryCanadiancontentwillalwayshaveasignificantplaceinCanadianhearts.Thebestwaytoachievethisgoalistoletpublicbroadcastingregainitslustre.Onekeyelementinthisrevivalmustbetofocusongenderandculturalinclusiveness.TheCBCneedstobecomeaplacethatincludesmorewomenandculturallydiverseperformersinfrontofandbehindthecamera.ACTRAisaleaderinthefightforgenderequality.WevealsohaveforgedallianceswithotherunionsandthroughtheCanadianLabourCongressweareunitedwithunionsfromacrossthecountry.WeareinspiredbyoursisterunionEquity.TheyareapartnerinEquityinTheatreanewCanadianinitiativethatfocusesongenderinequitiesinliveperformance.WeareinspiredbyoursisteruniontothesouthSAG-AFTRAwhosupportedtheGeenaDavisInstitutessecondannualglobalsymposiumongenderrepresentationinNYCLAandWashingtonD.C.WearepartofCUESCanadianUnionsforEqualityonScreen.Weareworkingwithotherindustryunionsandacademicstoreleaseasecondreportongenderinthescreen-basedindustries.ThisfallwejoinedCanadianwomensorganizationsfromacrossourindustryattheSt.JohnsInternationalWomensFilmFestivaltochallengefundingbodiesandtheindustrytostepupandensurewomenarefairlyrepresented.Inthenearfuturewellbedevelopingtoolstoencouragethosekeycreativedecision-makerstoensuremorewomenareworkingbehindandinfrontofthecamera.OurpublicbroadcasterhasauniqueroletoplayindaringtoreflectCanadabacktoCanadians.TheCBCmustbeaplacewhereaboveallelseourstoriesmatter.AlthoughACTRAsworkcoversabroadspectrummuchofwhatwedohasabaseinthenitty-grittyofourpoliticalsystem.Theeverquickeningdestructionofourpublicbroadcasterisbasedonpo-liticaldecisions.Weareheadingintoanimportantfederalelectionyear.Ibelievewecanandwillelectanewgovernment.Wemustensurethatthenextgovernmentrespectsourinstitutionsourunionsandtheself-employedartistswhodriveourculturalindustries.Asactorswehaveawayofgettingfolkstolistentous.Wecanusethosetremendousskillstoconnectwithpoliticiansandvoters.Wecanreachouttoallcandidatesanddemandthattheyspeakupstandupforourrightsandwecanmakeindividualeffortstomakesurethatcandidateswebelieveinhavethesupporttheyneedtogetelected.IamgoingtobeaskingeachandeveryoneofyoutoapproachcandidatesinyourridingtospeakwiththemaboutwhyculturemattersabouttheimportanceofshowingmoreCanadaonallourscreensandthebenefitsofcreatingavibrantexcitingspaceincyberspaceforallCanadians..FerneDowneyandMarkMcKinneyatthegatestoParliamentHillwheretheyshookupParliamentariansduringACTRAsNovemberLobbyDays.PhotoFredChartrandACTRAMagazineWinter20155 6ACTRAMagazineWinter2015WhatwasitliketoappearonbehalfofACTRAinfrontoftheCRTCaspartoftheLetsTalkTVconsultationKatieItwasfirstlyanhonourandsecondlynervewracking.IwantedtodoagoodjobforACTRAforeveryothermemberactorslikemethatIwasrepresenting.IalsowantedtobeabletoconversewiththeCRTConwhatseemedtomefairlycomplicatedissues.AsaCanadianitwasreallyexcitingtowatchandbeapartofourdemocraticprocessplayingout.Irememberastrongfeelingofdontscrewthisupanddoyourhomeworkwhichismaybetheover-ridingfeelingofmylifehahaIthinkACTRAandtheamazingpeoplewhoworkforusareincredible.AfterwitnessingitsinnerworkingsIfeltveryheartened.ACTRAiscomposedofpassionatetalentedin-dividualswhofighthardforourmembers.Itwasagifttobeabletobeinvolvedwithmyuniononthefrontlines.WhyisCanadiancontentimportanttoyouKatieItisimportanttomeforanumberofreasons.Obviouslyitismylivelihoodandasanindustryitisresponsibleformanypeopleslivelihoodsandcontributestooureconomyinnumerousways.MaybelessobviouslyIfeelthatCanadiansneedtoseemoreoftheirstoriestoldandmoreofourselvesonourscreens.Culturallyforourself-esteemasanationitisimportanttocontinuetofundCanadiancontent.WearecurrentlymakingshowslikeOrphanBlackthatarecompetingininternationalarenasarebeingrecognizedworldwidearebuildingastarsystemandaremakingCanadiansproud.ThatsnotgoingtohappenifbroadcastersonlineorotherwisearentmandatedtoshowCanadiancontentmadebyandaboutourcountry.CanadiansneedtobeexcitedaboutCanadianfilmandTVandIbelievewearegettingthere.Wecantstopnow.YouveworkedinconventionaltelevisionaswellasNewMediawhatsdifferentaboutthesetwoplatformsKatieIwouldsaythecreatingandshootingofthesetwoplatformsareessentiallythesame.Itsthebeforeandafterworkthatsdifferent.WhenyouareanonlinecontentcreatoryouhavemeansatyourfingertipstobuildandcontinuetoengagewithKatieBolandandFerneDowneyoutsidetheCRTCsLetsTalkTVhearingsroominGatineauQuebec.PhotoFredChartrand.QA
