The Conservatives are at it again.
Stephen Harper’s relentless campaign to tip the scales in favour of employers and at the expense of workers continues with the introduction of Bill C-377. This proposed piece of legislation seeks to hobble unions administratively with the obligation of filing incredibly detailed financial reports, including the specifics of all transactions over $5,000. Then, that information would be posted on a government website.
Once posted, employers and anti-union groups would be able to get extremely detailed information about how strong the union they are bargaining with actually is, like how big the union’s strike fund is.
The Canadian Labour Congress is spearheading the campaign to fight this Bill and ACTRA is participating fully. Specifically, the folk unions do business with – lawyers, accountants, financial advisors, insurance brokers, etc – are being asked to raise their concerns around the confidentiality of many of these business transactions.
The Federal Finance Committee is set to review C-377 this fall and we’ll keep you posted on developments.
