January 2011 – Fast Forward to 2011

Fast Forward to 2011

By Ferne Downey

We did a lot of fabulous things together in 2010 that set the stage to keep moving fast-forward into the year ahead.

We succeeded in getting a new CRTC Television Policy that ensures broadcasters have to commit a portion of their revenues to Canadian programming. That policy will be put into action this spring when the CRTC gives each broadcaster their marching orders when they renew their licences.

We joined forces with millions of creators across the country to make a whole lotta noise when the government unveiled their destructive copyright bill, C-32. This bill takes away creators’ rights, diminishes our control over our work and cuts away at our livelihoods.  Over the next few months we’ll keep up the fight to get this bill fixed, or we’ll call on Parliament to kill it.

In 2010 we also launched a new website and in 2011 we take another step forward with a fresh new ACTRA magazine hitting your doorstep in the next few weeks.

One of the things I am most proud of in 2010 was our decision to embrace new, inclusive, modern membership rules. It was a brave decision that I believe will serve all of us well, making us stronger, increasing our bargaining power, and growing work opportunities for professional performers by drying up non-union production. We’re going to need that muscle this spring when we head into negotiations on a new National Commercial Agreement.

The foundation of your union is solid, from coast-to-coast.  We will continue to build on that strength as we adapt and embrace our future.  I urge you to stay informed, stay involved and keep moving forward together in 2011. Happy New Year!

In solidarity,

Ferne Downey
