Canadian Performers Ratify New Independent Production Deal

January 11, 2103

ACTRA members vote “yes” to new 3-year agreement

TORONTO – ACTRA’s professional performers have voted overwhelming – 99% – in favour of the new Independent Production Agreement (IPA). The Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA), the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) and the Association des producteurs de films et de télévision du Québec (APFTQ) commenced negotiations on October 30, 2012 and reached tentative agreement on December 1, 2012. ACTRA obtained a pay increase of 6% over three years in the new 2013-2015 IPA.

“Canadian performers gave ACTRA’s national bargaining team a huge vote of confidence,” said Ferne Downey, ACTRA National President. “We are proud of this new Agreement as it provides improvements in working conditions, including strong protections against violence and harassment on set, enhanced equal opportunity provisions, improved provisions for minors, and major gains for voice and stunt performers. None of this could have been achieved without our strong bargaining committee and our unified membership.”

“This Agreement is good for Canadian performers and good for our industry,” said Stephen Waddell, ACTRA’s Chief Negotiator and National Executive Director. “We greatly appreciate the support of our sister unions and Canada’s talent agents throughout this round of negotiations. We look forward to working with producers to build a strong and vibrant industry.”

The IPA covers the engagement of performers in all film, television and new media production in Canada, except for British Columbia, in which province ACTRA’s local, ACTRA/UBCP negotiates a separate collective agreement. The rates in the new IPA took effect January 1, 2013.

ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) is the national union of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada. ACTRA represents the interests of 22,000 members across Canada – the foundation of Canada’s highly acclaimed professional performing community.
