About Performers’ Rights Society (PRS)

Who we are
ACTRA Performers’ Rights Society is the arm of ACTRA that collects and disburses Use Fees, royalties, residuals and all other forms of compensation or remuneration that performers may be entitled to as a result of their work.

ACTRA PRS makes sure you get the money you’re owed not only when you work but also when the production is distributed – no matter where and how the production is seen. Since we were incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1983, ACTRA PRS has paid out millions of dollars in Use Fees. In 2009 alone, ACTRA PRS distributed almost 38,000 cheques to performers totalling $5.4 million. Over the past 10 years, ACTRA PRS has mailed out 295,000 cheques putting $50 million directly in performers’ pockets.

We continue to remain true to what you believe in; we have hired staff, put systems in place to track your program and use fees and are aggressive with negligent producers. ACTRA’s collective agreements give PRS the strength to be proactive and aggressive with negligent producers.

ACTRA Recording Artists’ Collecting Society (RACS) is also part of PRS. The leading collective in Canada, RACS has been collecting and distributing money owed to sound recording artists for over 10 years. As a member of Re:Sound, we help disburse royalties collected on all tariffs related to sound recordings (commercial radio, private copying, CBC, etc.) under the Copyright Act. Any performer who has a sound recording repertoire can elect to have us collect and distribute their monies on their behalf.

We know this part of the business can be complicated, so we hope this PRS area of the website can answer some of your questions. We’re here to help, please contact us at any time!
