ferne-downey-bioFerne Downey

She is the Past President of ACTRA National, having just finished an unprecedented eight-year term in May 2017. Recent responsibilities include the honour of chairing the industry-wide round table on sexual harassment and institutional change.

Ferne Downey is President of the International Federation of Actors (FIA), a global federation of performers’ trade unions, guilds and professional associations. Founded in 1952, it represents several hundreds of thousands of performers with 90 member organizations in more than 60 countries around the world.  Ferne has served as FIA President since 2012 and is the first North American to lead the federation.

She also currently serves as Chair of the Board of Governors of AFBS and is enthusiastic about the future of our insurance and retirement fraternal organization, having served as ACTRA’s representative on the Board since 2002.

Ferne is a graduate of Dalhousie University’s Theatre Department and Harvard’s Trade Union Leadership program. She has spent the past 40 years working as an actor in television, film and radio. Her formative years were spent in the theatre and she will occasionally have her arm twisted to produce new Canadian work for the stage.

In June 2017, Ferne received an honorary degree for her “exceptional service to the community” granted by Dalhousie University, a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa – L.L.D.
