ACTRA renews commitment to the Actor’s Fund of Canada

February 21, 2014

OTTAWA –  ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) announced today that it will renew its support for the work of the Actors’ Fund of Canada by making a $15,000 contribution. This commitment comes in recognition of the crucial role that the Actors’ Fund continues to play in assisting members of the film & TV community and in response to the contribution challenge issued yesterday from CMPA President and CEO Michael Hennessy following CMPA’s $20,000 contribution to the Fund.

ACTRA National President Ferne Downey made the announcement this morning at CMPA’s Prime Time in Ottawa conference. “We are proud to renew our support for the work of the Actors’ Fund of Canada, at this time, in response to CMPA’s challenge,” said Downey. “The assistance the Fund provides continues to be essential to our members, and their families, in times of crisis. Award-winning members such as Colin Mochrie, Shawn Doyle and many others acknowledge that they were able to continue their performing careers, in part, due to assistance they received from the Actors’ Fund of Canada.”

ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) is the union of more than 22,000 professional performers working in English-language recorded media in Canada including TV, film, radio and digital media. ACTRA is proud to be the leading voice for Canadian culture and the development of Canada’s audiovisual industries.

The Actors’ Fund of Canada is the lifeline for Canada’s entertainment industry. Performers and others who work behind the scenes in film and television, theatre, music and dance can apply for emergency financial aid from the Fund. Through its Film and Television Relief Program (, the Fund will help hundreds of film & television industry workers recover from illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship in 2014. The Actors’ Fund of Canada was the recipient of the 2011 Gemini Special Award for exceptional service to the Canadian television industry.
