David Sparrow elected President of ACTRA National

TORONTO, ON (May 15, 2017) — David Sparrow has been elected by ACTRA’s National Council to a two-year term as National President.

“I am humbled by the confidence my fellow ACTRA members have shown in me,” said Sparrow. “ACTRA is a powerful union of incredibly talented performers and a leading advocate for Canadian culture. By working together, members from across the country have built a world-class screen industry here in Canada but we know there is still much more to do. I look forward to joining with all of our branch locals to embrace the challenges and successes to come.”

An ACTRA member for 27 years, Sparrow served as ACTRA Toronto President from 2013 until this year and has served as an ACTRA National Councillor since 2007. A member of ACTRA’s negotiating committees through several rounds of bargaining, David has played an active role in improving the terms and conditions for ACTRA members working under the National Commercial Agreement, the Independent Production Agreement and agreements with videogame developer Ubisoft.

David’s career has taken him from stage to film and television, and from performing to writing, producing and directing. With over 100 Canadian and U.S. film and TV credits, and extensive experience in commercials and animation, David is equally at home in front of the camera or behind the microphone. He is a proud member of ACTRA’s sister unions Canadian Actors’ Equity Association and SAG-AFTRA.

The election for President took place at ACTRA’s National Council this past weekend in Toronto. Sparrow replaces outgoing President Ferne Downey who will remain on ACTRA’s National Council as Past President and will continue to serve as President of FIA, the International Federation of Actors.

ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) is the national union of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada. ACTRA represents the interests of 23,000 members across the country – the foundation of Canada’s highly-acclaimed professional performing community.
