ACTRA hopeful new CRTC leadership will bring new direction

Toronto, ON (July 18, 2017) — ACTRA National Executive Director Stephen Waddell provided ACTRA’s reaction to the appointment of new CRTC chairman Ian Scott and new vice-chair Caroline Simard.

“We hope Mr. Scott and Ms. Simard can bring a new direction to the Commission – one that respects and fosters the contributions of Canadian creative talent,” said Waddell. “A key part of the CRTC’s mandate is to ensure the vibrant expression of Canadian culture and identity. That has been ignored too often under the outgoing Chair. We welcome a change.”

Waddell noted that ACTRA had joined other creative sector voices to call for the appointment of CRTC commissioners with some background in film and television production. “ACTRA is eager to work with new leadership if they are ready to set a new direction, but the lack of any commissioners with experience in film and television production is still an issue. Broadcasters and telecoms are well-represented at the table. It would be good to see a voice for creators as well.”

Earlier this morning, cabinet announced that Ian Scott will be the new chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. Caroline Simard has also been appointed as vice-chair of broadcasting.

ACTRA, in alliance with other industry stakeholders, is currently petitioning cabinet to review CRTC decisions on broadcast license renewals, which will allow some broadcasters to dramatically reduce investment in “Programs of National Interest.”

ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) is the national union of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada. ACTRA represents the interests of 23,000 members across the country – the foundation of Canada’s highly-acclaimed professional performing community. www.actra.ca
