A shot in the arm for Canadian culture

CRTC approves sale of Astral to BCE, imposes measures to protect public interest

TORONTO – Canada’s professional performers commend the CRTC today for taking steps to protect the public interest while approving the sale of Astral Media’s broadcast assets to BCE. Canadian culture will benefit from the commission’s revaluation of the proposed transaction adding $1.154 billion to the total assessment. The “tangible benefits” of $246.9 million are based on the assessed value and used to fund new Canadian film and television production.

“We are pleased with the CRTC’s decision to support a diverse, healthy, competitive Canadian media market,” said ACTRA National Executive Director Stephen Waddell. “While we remain concerned about the general concentration and vertical integration granted to BCE, we had argued that if this merger were to be approved conditions must be attached, and the commission has done that.”

ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) is the national union of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada. ACTRA represents the interests of 22,000 members across Canada – the foundation of Canada’s highly acclaimed professional performing community.
