Program Overview

Intimacy Coordinators (ICs) have an important role to play in helping to tell a story and support performers’ and crew safety when working in the Canadian film and television industry.

Level Up: Intimacy Coordinators is a program to help upskill ACTRA members across the country who are interested in pursuing a career as an IC.

Are you thinking about pursuing a career as an Intimacy Coordinator?

The journey to becoming a certified Intimacy Coordinator is a comprehensive and multi-stage process.

We recognize that due to financial and geographical barriers, many aspiring IC’s have not been able to complete the necessary training to become fully certified – particularly in regions outside of Toronto and Vancouver. Additionally, some productions require a level of niche specialization or cultural competency that the current roster of fully accredited IC’s does not satisfy.

Ensuring diversity of ICs in all regions in ethnicity, gender, and gender identity (for example), are key to effectively developing this work category in Canada.

If you are an ACTRA member who is interested in completing training components required to become a fully Certified Intimacy Coordinator, we encourage you to express your interest in participating in this program. Please note that submitting an expression of interest DOES NOT guarantee you a spot in this program, as a limited number of spots are available.

ACTRA will be in touch with all individuals who have expressed interest in the program in June 2026.

Expression of Interest Deadline: May 31, 2026 at 11:59pm PST

Program Guidelines

About the Program:

The goal of Level Up: Intimacy Coordinators is to have ACTRA members who aspire to be IC’s to become them, by providing access to the various training components required to become a fully Certified Intimacy Coordinator.

There are typically three necessary components to becoming a fully certified Intimacy Coordinator:

  1. Online theoretical foundational courses (part-time -12-16 weeks) – Aspiring ICs begin with theoretical and practical workshops that cover core concepts of consent and power dynamics.
  2. In-Person practical workshops (2-4 days) – an in-person workshop designed to apply the concepts learned online, physically.
  3. On-set Apprenticeship/Shadowing (~20 days) – one-on-one mentorship with a certified IC and the opportunity to shadow senior professionals on active film sets, providing invaluable hands-on experience.

Level Up aims to get as many aspiring IC’s as possible as far as possible through the above Certification process.
